An inspection of the spot map of deer kill for the Sequoia Forest does not indicate that the large area included in the Sequoia National Park has been of value as the refuge theory would have it. In Figure 65 the cir- cumscribed areas marked " A " are in the better deer range and all within four miles of the north and south boundaries of the park. It would be assumed that within these areas there should be a definite indication of refuge influence if such existed. They contained 185 square miles, and there was recorded a kill of deer per square mile in 1940. In an area (! ^.
