Anatomy and physiology : designed for academies and families . f thechest, embracing the heart, and separated from each other by DeseriSt the lungs. Wh«re situated ? ANATOMY OF THE LUNGS AND TRACHEA. 159 a membranous partition, called the mediastinum. The colorof the lungs is a pinkish gray, mottled, and variously markedwith black. Each lung is divided into lobes, by a long anddeep fissure, which extends from the posterior surface of theupper part of the organ, downward and forward, nearly to theanterior angle of the base. In the right lung, the upper lobeis subdivided by a second fissure. This lung is larger andshorter than the left. It has three lobes, while the left hasonly two. Each lung is enclosed, and its structure maintained, by aserous membrane, named the pleura, which invests it as far asthe root, and is thence reflected upon the parietes, or walls ofthe chest. That part of the membrane which is in relationwith the lung, is called the pleura pulmonalis ; and that partwhich is in contact with the parietes, the pleura costalis. Fig. Fig. 110. Exhibits the heart and lungs removed from the chest, and the lungs freedfrom all other attachments. Thev are arranged so as to show the parts with greateraccuracy. 1, The right auricle of the heart. 2, The superior vena cava. 3, The in-ferior vena cava. 4, The right ventricle. 5, The pulmonary arterv issuing from , a.
