He went to France inNovember, 1915, and saw service at the Battles of Hooge,the Somme, Contalmaison, Martinpuich, Lesars, Bau-paume, and the Messine Ridge. Transferred as a cadet in 1916 to the 8th Yorks andLanes Regiment. During 1917 he was three times wounded, and wassubsequently discharged from hospital in January, 1918. Pte. G. B. Within ten days of the outbreak of war he hadjoined the 5th Highland Light Infantry. His battalionformed part of the 52nd Division, and he was with it atGallipoli, being severely wounded during the charge atAchi Baba, 12th July, 1915.
