On the right, beyond the group, which is in strong relief of lightand shade, rises a great clump of \arious kinds of trees, their foliage flecked bysunlight and their slender branches showing here and there among the lea\es. Onthe lefl a single birch with slender but crooked stem rises out of the picture, andin the distance is an irregular hillside, sloping down to the seashore, where are seena red-roofed whitewashed building and a solitary rounded tree. In the distance, seen between the large screen of foliage on theright and smaller trees on the left, is a line of steep-roofed buildings, evidently astreet in a populous village. The hour is twilight, and the sun, some distance belowthe horizon, sheds a modified golden glow over the simple sky, which is coveredwith a mass of thin vapor, and touches with ruddy light a few small scuds driftingacross near the zenith.
