Shoulder effusion in osteoarthritis. Close-up of the swollen shoulder of an 86-year-old female patient affected by effusion caused by severe osteoarthritis. Effusion is the accumulation of fluid in a joint, which causes swelling and pain, and limits the movement of the joint. Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve the symptoms. Rest and bandaging can help to reduce the swelling, although the fluid may have to be drawn out with a syringe in some cases. Physiotherapy may be required to fully restore joint mobility.
