Printing was first invented by Gutenberg in 1441,but the first English printer was William Caxton, whois supposed to have been born about 1422. For manyyears he lived in Bruges as governor of the Englishtraders. When he was forty-seven years of age he be-gan to translate from the French a book about theTrojan War. Not long after, he entered the service ofthe Duchess of Burgundy, to whom he presented histranslation in 1471. So many people wantedcopies that he grew tired of writing and be-gan to think of printing. Caxton learned the art from Collard Man-sion, a printer in Bruges, who had his print-ing-pre
