The red signpost was used as a marker to direct illiterate guards who were escorting prisoners from Dorchester Prison to Portsmouth, from where they were transported to Botany Bay in Australia. Nearby can be found Botany Bay Farm, where there are the remains of a barn that was used as a cell to hold the prisoners on their first overnight stop.
