This was establishedat Lansing in 1855, in the northeastern jxDrtion of thecity, as the House of Correction for Juvenile Of-fenders, Having about it manv of the features of aprison. In 1859 the name was changed to the StateReform School. The government and dicipline, haveundergone many and radical changes, until all theprison features have been removed except those thatremain in the walls of the original structure, andwhich remain only as monuments of instructive his-tory. No bolts, bars or guards are employed. Theinmates are necessaiily kept under the surveillance ofofficers, but the attempts at escape are much fewerthan the more rigid regitne of former
