Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph of Giardia lamblia (orange), a parasitic flagellate protozoan which causes the disease lambliasis (giardiasis). Seen here attched by means of sucking discs to microvilli in the human small intestine. Microvilli are tiny fingers of tissue (pink), which project from the surface of the larger structures called villi. Microvilli are of uniform length giving the impression of a brush- border. Like villi, they increase the absorptivity of the intestines by increasing the surface area over which it occurs. Infestations by Giardia reduces absorption & may lead to diarrhoea. Magnification: x1200 at 35mm,x2500 at 6x7cm size. Microcosmos fig
