View NE of the Iron Age ring fort, blockhouse & manmade causeway linked to the S shore of the Loch of Huxter, Whalsay, Shetland, Scotland, UK. A drystone wall up to (4-5ft) thick enclosing most of the island abuts a fortified gatehouse at the SW opposite the causeway. In 1863, when stone was being removed from the site to build a school, the blockhouse stood up to (8ft) high with remains of a second storey visible. The entrance passage dividing the blockhouse in two was still roofed & contained upright door checks and a bar-hole to secure a door. There was a corbelled cell in each half of the thick wall entered from the fort interior by a low doorway. A length of transverse walling outside the blockhouse protected the entrance. The buildings of Huxter are visible on the hill to the rear.
