The dock at the Port of Ipswich is located at a bend of the River Orwell which has been used for trade since at least the 8th century. A wet dock was constructed in 1842, when lock gates enclosed what became the largest enclosed dock in the UK at that time. A major regeneration of the area has taken place since the 1990s and the port’s commercial activity is now located further downstream. The waterfront area here is now almost exclusively devoted to residential, education development and leisure activities. The dock itself is the home moorings for leisure-craft of all shapes and sizes. This image is from an old amateur black and white negative. It will look slightly soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
