The etching depicts the ruins of Barnard Castle in the historic market town which bears its name, Barnard Castle, County Durham, England. The castle stands on a high rock above a stone arched bridge spanning the River Tees and was named after its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. In the 15th century, the castle was further developed by the English King, Richard III; it is now in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public. The bridge dates from the 14th century and was sometimes called 'County Bridge' as it was formerly on the boundary between County Durham and Yorkshire. It was repaired in 1596 and after the Great Flood of 1771. Joseph F Pimm studied at the Birmingham School of Art and exhibited widely in national and international galleries, including the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon, where he gained a silver medal.
