Heinrich Christian Schumacher (1780-1850), German astronomer. Schumacher was director of the observatory at Mannheim from 1813-1815, and then professor of astronomy at Copenhagen. He is best remembered for his 1821 founding of the academic journal Astronomische Nachrichten (Astronomical Notes), which is the oldest continously published astronomical journal, still being published over 180 years later. He edited 31 issues, and is shown here holding a copy of the journal. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1829.
