This was accordingly done; hence theeducational interests of the State suffered only temporary incon-venience from the reduction two years before. The peace of the State was seriously disturbed by riots atShenandoah in the fall of the year 1900. An extensive strikewas then in progress in the anthracite coal region, and on Sep-tember 21. two thousand men occupied the streets of Shenandoah,firing revolvers and resisting the civil authorities.
