Collecting horse blood, artwork. These horse have previously been injected with diphtheria toxin and their blood serum now contains diphtheria antitoxin, that is antibodies that neutralise diphtheria toxin. The antitoxin was used to treat the disease between 1891 and the 1920s, when a vaccine was introduced. Diphtheria is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Symptoms include sore throat, fever and breathing difficulties.
