Basingwerk Abbey, looking through west door to lay brothers nave and south aisle, south transept arch and chapter house. Substantial remains of C12th Cistercian abbey originally founded 1131 by Ranulf as a Savignac Benedictine order house . In 1157, Owain Gwynedd encamped with his army at Basingwerk before facing the forces of Henry II at the Battle of Ewloe. The Welsh prince stayed in the abbey because of its strategic importance, blocking the route that Henry II had to overcome., Edward I granted privileges to monks after making his base here while building Flint castle at start of North Wales campaign. Re established by Henry II, By the 13th century, the abbey was under the patronage of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd. His son Dafydd ap Llywelyn gave St Winefride's Well to the abbey. The monks harnessed the power of the Holywell stream to run a corn mill and to treat the wool from their sheep. It was one of the stops on the medieval pilgrimage route to Bardsey Island. It grew to be rich and lax by the end of C15th with so many guests two sittings were needed to feed them, and wines from Aragon, Castile & Brittany were served, Dissolved 1536. Situated overlooking Dee estuary on plateau occupied in Roman & Mercian times. Giraldus Cambrensis & Archbishop Baldwin spent their last night in Wales here.
