This opera-tion closes the space between the pointsof each pair of permanent lockingwedges and doubles the space betweenthe butts. Tlie enlarged spaces between thebutts have to be filled in order to holdtlie locking wedges in place, and this isaccomplished by the use of what arecalled sprags, or supports, wliich aresteel wedges, and when these are putin place in the inner flanges of the tire, final closers are cast around them, andthe whole is a solid tight fit. In order to take off a worn tire it isonly necessary to cut the tire in ^ccs and the whole falls apart mosteasily. The salvage in the scrap valueof the old tire is more than enough topay for the cost of renewal. One ofthe reasons why this form of wheel con-struction will appeal to mechanical men is that there is not much machinewo
