An engineering model of the Soviet Sputnik 2 spacecraft on display at the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas, one of America's leading space and rocket museums. This unusual exhibit is real space hardware but was used for tests rather than actual flight. Sputnik 2 was launched on 3 November 1957 and carried the dog Laika, a model of which can be seen in the canister at bottom; the top section contained science instruments and the spherical centre section the communications equipment (a virtual replica of Sputnik 1). The satellite is displayed in half of the rocket's nose fairing.
