At least five successive petrified forests, represented by silicified stumps of Metasequoia, are present in the lower half of the Tullock Formation in Section 33 T24N, R44E, in McCone County, Montana. The stumps in these forests have a diameter (breast high) of about 2 to 4 feet (.6 to m), suggest- ing that the Tullock forests had crown heights of some 60 to 120 feet (19 to 37 m). The stumps are rooted in the middle shales of the alluviation cycles of the Tullock. Nearby, in Section 35, T24N, R44E, a series of 32 Metasequoia stumps is exposed, all rooted in the uppermost bed of the W-coalseam of the lower Tullock.
