Ballet Dancer Marie Taglioni & her brother Paul Taglioni in La Sylphide. -- La Sylphide, also known in Danish as Sylfiden is a romantic ballet in two acts. Two versions are known the original being choreographed by Filippo Taglioni in 1832, and another choreographed by August Bournonville in 1836. Bournonville's (one of the world's oldest surviving ballets) is the only version known to have survived . La Sylphide was the first known ballet where dancing en pointe was used for artistic purposes (rather than as an acrobatic demonstration).
