Here in themidst of the wilderness, in a regionwhich was subsequently called Mau-ry Co., they reared their log huts,and established their homes. In thehard toil of a new farm in the wil-derness, James K. Polk spent theearly years of his childhood andyouth. His father, adding the pur-suit cf a surveyor to that of a farmer,gradually increased in wealth untilhe became one of the leading men of the region.
