In the )ear i3o6, with his wifeand children, and soon after fol-lowed by most of the members ofthe Polk famly, Samuel Polk emi-grated some two or three hundredmiles farther west, to the rich valleyof the Duck River. Here in themidst of the wilderness, in a regionwhich was subsequently called Mau-ry Co., they reared their log huts,and established their homes. In thehard toil of a new farm in the wil-derness, James K. Polk spent theearly years of his childhood andyouth. His father, adding the pur-suit cf a surveyor to that of a farmer,gradually increased in wealth untilhe became one of the leading men of the region.
