At the time of themove in 1858, he was appointed to re-main behind, together with others, taburn the property of the Saints, in casethe soldiers, whom he witnessed passthrough Salt Lake City, should provehostile; for some time after their ar-rival in the valley, he was one of thosewho were appointed to watch theirmovements. In 1861 he was called tohaul rocks from the Little Cottonwoodcanyon for the Salt Lake Temple. Hedrove a 4-yoke ox-team, and it tooktwo days or more to make a round trip;. some of the rocks he hauled weighedfour or five tons. He was ordainedan Elder April 10, 1862. and receivedhis endowments. In 1862 and 1863 hemade two trips to the Missouri riverand back as a Church teamster, tobring poor Saints to the Valley. , 1864, he married a daughter ofThomas and Susannah Margetts, withwhom he has had twelve children-eight boys and four girls. He laboredfor many years as a teacher in theWest Jordan Ward,and was ordained aSeventy by Samuel Bateman Jan. 13,1884.
