Washington, DC., USA, 19th January, 1992 Oil spill clean up on the Anacostia RIver in Washington DC. About 3,400 gallons of fuel oil spilled into the river, apparently after the rupture of a pipe at a petroleum company in Southeast Washington. Firefighters and Coast Guard officials worked all day to confine the spill by lining the banks of the Anacostia with absorbent spill occurred midway between the Sousa and 11th Street bridges. The fuel spread upstream to just north of the Sousa and downstream past the 11th Street bridge, a distance of about a mile. Credit: Mark Reinstein
