A bibliographical, antiquarian and picturesque tour in France and Germany . Statues in die Grand rorcli®F THE CATWIMBMAIL AT CHAlRTmES ^.dFur rTi^Jiey. ; MISCELLANEOUS ANTIQUITIES. 495. I think you will admit that I am making ampleamends for apparently past negligence respectingMISCELLANEOUS ANTIQUITIES. I havc oftcn told youthat Francis I. and Henri IV. are the great regalobjects of admiration with French antiquaries. Inthe cabinet or museum of antiquities, in the RoyalLibrary, they preserve the bronze helmet and shieldwhich were worn by Francis in battle. His head, inmarble, adorns the Louvre. It is a thoroughly originalcountenance; bespeaking the naivete, vivacity, wit, courage, and enterprise of the original. The plaister- 496 PARIS. shops of Paris have casts of this head both with, andwithout, the helmet. I preferred it in the forjtier state, and have recently bought one,—with which I knowyou wiW be delighted.* * After this bust had reached England, it was draAvn by in a style of equal brilliancy and fidelity; and has beenthus exquisitely engraved by Mr, S. FREEaiAN.
