Coronary balloon catheter. This balloon catheter is used in treating stenosis (narrowing) of the coronary arteries. During the treatment, a procedure known as an angioplasty, the catheter is used to guide a stent (wire mesh tube) into the narrowed region of the artery. The wider part seen at upper left is then inflated to expand the stent. When the catheter is deflated and removed, the stent retains its expanded shape, keeping the artery open to ensure normal blood flow.
