The 1906 caption reads: “Victor Emmanuel III Taking the Oath of Office. Victor Emmanuel III, king of Italy, took the oath of office August 11, 1900. His father had been assassinated nearly two weeks before; but the prince had been at sea in his yacht; and took some time to find him and arrange matters. He signed the oath in the presence of the chief parliamentary officers, judges, and generals of the land, while a brilliant assembly of all Italy’s leading men filled the great hall below the raised dais prepared for the throne.”
