The trailer carrying a spitfire overturned on the southbound carriageway near Burntcommon. The incident happened between the B2215 London Road and the Clay Lane junction near Burpham. One lane is currently blocked and there is slow traffic southbound towards Guildford. Police and recovery services are on the scene. We’ve just been able to speak briefly to Terry Barlow, the man whose spitfire model it was that came off the A3 earlier. Mr Barlow build the plane up bit-by-bit, piece-by-piece nearly 30 years ago made out of various old Spitfire pieces. He was en route to a show on the Isle of Wight when the trailer sheared off and crashed into the embankment. A spokesman said: “Surrey Police is currently in attendance on the southbound carriageway of the A3 near Wisley following reports of a collision involving a vehicle trailer. “At around today (Friday, 1 July) a vehicle with a trailer attached carrying a light aircraft was travelling on the motorway when the trailer became detached and left the road before colliding with a tree. “There were no reports of any injuries but the road remains partially closed whilst the trailer and aircraft are recovered from the scene.”©UKNIP
