Male and female hunters carry spears and hold groups of hounds on leads as they walk, wearing Renaissance costume, across the late 16th century front of Stadtplatz 33, one of two remarkable ‘sgraffito houses’ in the town square at Gmünd, Lower Austria, Austria. The German inscription below the band of restored sgraffito art relates to panels further down the facade depicting the biblical story of Samson.

Gmünd, Lower Austria, Austria: hunters – both men and women – carry spears and hold groups of hounds on leads as they walk, wearing Renaissance costume, across the late 16th century front of Stadtplatz 33, one of two remarkable ‘sgraffito houses’ in the town square. The German inscription below the band of restored sgraffito art relates to panels further down the facade depicting the biblical story of Samson. Sgraffito is the ancient artistic technique of scratching, scraping or cutting away parts of a surface layer of plaster, stucco or paint to expose a different colour or texture underneath.
