A British description ofNew York Island during the Revolution refers to McGownsPass as a place where a few troops might stop an army (47). The active military history of the place begins with theoccupation of the Island by the British on September 15,1776, although prior to that date many bodies of troops hadmarched up or down through the Pass, and many a train ofheavy wagons or artillery had plodded by the old tavern onthe way from or to the then distant City.
