A young boy suffering from severe atopic dermatitis


18 Month old Andrew Anderson of Arvada CO has suffered severe atopic dermatitis since he was 2 months old. Andrew was visiting National Jewish hospital for the first time to receive a special wrap developed to treat this severe form of allergic reaction. The basic problem with atopic dermatitis that the skin will not hold moisture. Many of the children arrive at the hospital looking like burn patients. They start the treatment by taking a 20 minute bath in plain hot water often with their head and face wrapped in towels to help the moisture penetrate. Immediately afterwards medicated creams as well as moisturizers are applied and the patients are dressed in a layer of wet clothes a layer of dry clothes and then wrapped for two hours. The simple procedure has proved very effective in treating atopic dermatitis patients.
