Asian hornet research. Analysis being carried out by a researcher investigating the genetic character and behaviour of the invasive Asian hornet species Vespa velutina. This hornet, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004, and has been spreading, attacking people and preying on native honeybee species. The researcher is placing samples of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) samples in a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) device which will magnify the DNA present in the samples to aid analysis. This work is being done at a CNRS facility in the suburbs of Paris, France.
