For this reason it is not uncommon for the fracture toescape notice until the appearance of the callous mass over the point of frac-ture (often first noticed by the mother) gives the first indication that a frac-ture of the clavicle had occurred during delivery. When the fracture is single, treatment has been carried out with a simple 38 BIRTH FRACTURES AND EPIPHYSEAL DISLOCATIONS Velpeau bandage. After the application of a dusting powder, the skin of thearm and axilla is protected by a square of interposed folded gauze, and theshoulder-girdle of the injured side is immobilized by means of a snug Vel-peau fixed in a position similar to that in fracture of the humerus. Whenboth clavicles have been fractured a figure-of-eight bandage across the backwhich draws both shoulders well backward has been serviceable. Union hasbeen firm in three weeks and in no case has union failed to take Fig. 20.—Birth fracture of the cla\Rk shuwing the usual site of thefracture, with the usual displacement, similar to that seen in the fractures, sometimes unobserved until the development of the callousmass, repair quite promptly with simple fixation of the arm and shoulder-girdle, without resulting deformity or disability of any sort.
