Mission San Xavier del Bac, Santa Cruz Valley, Tucson, Arizona, USA
Mission San Xavier del Bac is situated in the Santa Cruz Valley nine miles south of Tucson, Arizona, United States. A native Indian settlement of Tohono O'odham located on the site of the Mission was called Bac, "place where the water appears", because the Santa Cruz River, which ran underground for some distance, reappears on the surface nearby. Foundations laid in 1700. The building is sometimes called "White Dove of the Desert".
