Of the sixteen lacs of rupees which in 1765, hisbrother, Najmuddowla, had paid to the Company uponbond, three lacs were repaid to Syefuddowla and thebalance, which remained due to the Nawab, he gaveas a fund, to be disposed of in the same manner asthe five lacs bequeathed to Clive by Meer Jaffer. Though the old musnud remained in the Nawabspalace at Murshidabad, real authority passed intothe Chamber of the Directors in London. Theyconsidered, however, that the majesty and the dignityof the Government still resided in the Nawab andhis ministers and these only were known to theinhabitants as the power to whom they were account-able.
