Electric The use of storage batteries upon electric rail-ways and lighting stations has within the last fewyears reached great prominence, and it has becomean accepted fact with most engineers that batteriesshould necessarily form part of modern designs forpower systems of this character. The most customary applications of batteries toelectric railway systems in the past have been inthe stations where direct current is generated, andat points far out upon the lines, say from 5 to 10miles from the power house. In both cases thebatteries have in general been installed to regulatethe excessive fluctuations in load peculiar to rail-way work. By thus relieving the machinery andcopper of these rapid changes in load, and obtain-ing a constant load factor approximately 100 perper cent, the cost of operation, the maintenance ofmachinery and the first cost of machinery andcopper have been in a great many cases reduced.
