Map of China. 17th-century map showing sixteen provinces of China, as well as Korea and Japan. Features include the Great Wall of China (upper centre) and depictions of Chinese people (top left). The map is titled: 'Imperii sinarvm nova descriptio' and is from 'Novus Atlas Sinensis' (1655). This atlas was produced by the Italian Jesuit missionary, cartographer and historian Martino Martini (1614-1661) who arrived in the region in 1642, leaving in 1651. He returned in 1658 and died there in 1661. 'Novus Atlas Sinensis' was the most complete geographical account of China of its time. It was published in Amsterdam in 1655 by Joan Blaeu.
