He declined to do anything, either by voiceor pen, to strengthen the hand of the National Gov-ernment. He continued to reside in Concord untilthe time of his death, which occurred in October,1869. He was one of the most genial and social ofmen, an honored communicant of the EpiscopalChurch, and one of the kindest of neighbors.
