JOHN EVERTON RAMSEY, Banker, was bornin Chester county, near Oxford, Pennsylvania,July 10, 1853, son of James Reid and Mary(Dickey) Ramsey. His ancestors on both the 472 UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR SONS paternal and maternal side, who were of Scotch-Irish origin, emigrated from the north of Irelandinto Chester county, Pennsylvania, in the early partof the eighteenth century. His father was one ofthe incorporators and aided largely in the con-struction of the Philadelphia & Baltimore CentralRailroad, of which he was Treasurer at the timeof his death in 1S71. He took an active and lead-ing part in the affairs of his district, was a Trusteeand Treasurer of the Oxford Presbyterian Church,and highly esteemed as a man of ability and in-tegrity. His mother, Mary Dickey, a woman of. J. E. KAiMaEV great strength of character both intellectually andmorally, was the daughter of Samuel Dickey, whowas one of the first in the United States to engagein cotton manufacture. She was a first cousin ofRlv. John M. Dirkey, , widely as thefounder of Lincoln University. John \]. Ramseylived on his fathers farm in Chester county untileighteen years of age, attended the public schoolof his district, and was fitted for College at the0.\ford Academy. He entered Princeton in thefall of 1871, stood well in his class, but left at closeof his Sophomore year to enter business, thedeath of his father having interfered with his plansfor graduation. In 1873 he became connectedwith the Nntinnal of Oxford as TrlKr. and since has been its Cashier. He has also been,for fifteen years, the Treasu
