Light micrograph of the skin epidermis (the surface lining of skin), cut in cross-section. The 'stars', the many round structures are dermal papillae which are projections of underlying connective tissue into the skin surface. The many cells surrounding the papillae are squamous cells, which make up much of the skin epidermis. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 100x when printed at 10cm.
