[painter] c. 1740-1786 ? Tapestry Dimensions: H 9' x W 4'9" Tapestry Materials/Techniques: unknown Culture: French Weaving Center: Paris Ownership History: French & Co. Amongst exotic plants, a male figure in loin cloth sits on rock, holding a bow, other weapons tied to trunk of tree, on which there is a parrot; lizards with variety of shellfish (R) & fish half submerged in river in foreground (BRD) picture-frame border with godroon motif; shells with scrolling acanthus leaves in corners; (L & R BRD) centered by flower head in roundel framed by acanthus leaves Possibly a fragment of tapestry, due to the narrower width compared to similar tapestries. In addition, neither the border nor the workshop can be identified (Cavallo/Soustelle). This panel, at first, appears to have more in common with its pendant from "Les Indes", as seen in Krotoff Yet, the quality of the depiction does not seem to hold to the original version, thus pointing to a later date, either from the "Nouvelles Indes" series (despite of the absence of characteristics proper to the new series, such as the feathers in the figure's head) or even a later production (Soustelle).
