Peter Dollond (1730-1820), British optician, with a piece of optical equipment. In partnership with his father John Dollond (1706-1761), Peter Dollond patented a method of making achromatic lenses in 1758. These lenses solved the problem of chromatic aberration (colour fringes) in telescope and microscope images. A compound achromatic lens had been devised in the 1730s, but one of the subcontracted manufacturers passed the details of the invention to John Dollond. The Dollonds acquired great wealth from their patent. This image is from the September 1820 issue of The European Magazine, published in London.
