This consists of aset of taper cone sleeves in halves, fitting in the counterborc, supportingthe bar central while bolting up theblocks and crossheads, after which thecones are removed and the bar is readyfor reboring. The sleeves being taper, one set can be used in bushings ofvarious sizes within their range. These portable boring bars are manu-factured by E. J. Rooksby & Co., whoseoffices and works are at 431-439 NorthEleventh street, Philadelphia. BulletinL, illustrating and describing thesetools, will be sent to all interestedparties on request. These tools aremade in a number of sizes to reborecylinders of the smallest simple shift-ing or contractors locomotives to thelargest low pressure cylinders on thelatest types of compound CVLINIIER .\.\li \ . RORIXG B.\R. l)oring with only one head removed, tlie expanding chuck and pin, havingfive sets of taper gibs to fit the stuffingboxes of various diameters, is used tosupport the crank end of the bar. The power is applied to the bar bymeans of a back gear driving powerhaving a two-speed quick-change geardrive. This is also a recent improve-ment of particular advantage where thesame bar is used to rebore cylindersand valve chamber bushings of varioussizes. The quick change is accom-plished by simply pulling out a slippin, shifting the primary pinion out ofgear and driving by the intermediateshaft. As the illustration clearly shows, all gears are completely encased. They have also designed an improvedtool holder using high speed cutters forextra hard service. The cutterhead isfed by means of an automatic feed casehaving two changes of feed controlledby a sl
