He had been a loyal Unionman during the war, had been in closebusiness relationship with some of theFederal leaders and was naturally strong-ly Republican in his sympathies. So hel^ecame a Republican candidate for thelegislature. However, he was defeatedby trickery within the party, and, dis-gusted by this dishonesty, joined theopposition. In 1866 he was elected tothe lower branch of the West Virginialegislature, as a Democrat. While ser-ving there he was occupied principallywith legislation concerning the financialsystem of the new-born state. Two3^ears later he was elected to the StateSenate, where he took a still moreprominent part in financial legislation.
