The cartilaginous tumor, to which Miiller has applied the term enchondroma, holds, histologically speaking, a position intermediate between the fibrous andosseous, being harder than the former and softer than the latter. Occurring invarious parts of the body, as the ovary, testicle, mamma, and the parotid region,as well as in the subcutaneous and intermuscular cellular substance, it is mostfrequently found in connection with the skeleton, its most common sites beingthe metacarpal bones and the phalanges of the fingers. I have seen large andnumerous growths of this kind form simultaneously upon both hands and feet, causing hideous deformity and almost complete loss of function of the affectedparts. Although it occasionally takes place in elderly subjects, it is by far most CHAP. VII. The annexedsketch, fig. 34, from a specimen in my pos-session, conveys a good idea of the externalcharacters of a cartilaginous tumor as itoccurred upon one of the fingers. The enormous size which an enchondromamay sometimes attain is well illustrated in acase which came under, my observation lastwinter in a young man twenty-six years ofage. The tumor, which occupied the rightshoulder, had appeared about six years pre-viously and involved the scapula, humerus, and clavicle, forming an immense mass, of very irregular outline, excessively hard,forty-five inches in circumference at the base, and weighing, as was ascertainedby I)r. H. J. Bigelow after death, thirty-one pounds. The structure of this variety of tumor is subject to great diversit
