In the middle ages, the Ladies of Enights were occasionallyassociated with the Order of the Garter, but before the close ofthe sixteenth century, this singular association fell into effigies of Lady Harcourt, the wife of Sir Robert Har-court, , and of the Duchess of Suffolk, at Euelme inOxfordshire, have the Garter; the fonner lady wears it uponher left arm, No. 292, PI. This Order is supposed to have been originally instituted atan early period of Scottish Histoiy. It now exists in conformitywith the Statutes of James II, and Queen Anne, the latter dated1703. By a subsequent statute of the year 1827, the order con-sists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights. The Star of this Order, worn on the left side, is formed of aSt. Andrews Cross of silver, with rays isstiing from betweenthe points so as to form a lozenge; in the centre, upon a field ofgold, is a Thistle proper, surrounded by a circle of green enamel,charged with the Motto in golden letters; No. 593, PI.
