Insulin production. Computer artwork of the human pancreas (yellow) and an islet of Langerhans (green) producing the hormone insulin (small spheres). The pancreas is a gland situated in the human abdomen (left) that produces insulin and passes it into the blood system, where it regulates the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. The production of insulin is controlled by the endocrine hormone system. This acts on the alpha cells within the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and stimulates them to either secrete or stop secreting insulin depending on how much is already in the blood system.
