Although of Spanish origin, this variety must not be confounded with the yellow onion named Spanisfi King, which is inferior in size and quality to the Amepican-grown PRIZE-TAKER. The Prize-Taker Onion grows uniform in shape, of a nearly perfect globe, as shown in the illustration, with thin skin of a clean, bright straw color ; it is of immense size, measuring from twelve to sixteen inches in circumference, while under special cultivation specimen bulbs have been raised to weigh from four to six pounds each. It ripens up hard and fine, and presents the handsomest possible appearance in market, while the pure white flesh is fine-grained, mild, and delicate in flavor. HISTORY OF THE PRIZE-TAKER. In the winter of 1887 a shipment of the fine, ' large, straw-colored onions from Spain was received in San Francisco. As the price was too high to command a ready sale on the markets, a large proportion was bought in the early spring by a California seed grower (Mr. C. C. Morse, author of the paper, " American Seed Growing," in our new book, Selection in Seed Growing). Setting these large bulbs out for seed, the seed was first olfered in 1888 under the name PRIZE- TAKER, but as the variety is a shy seeder, it was some years before it became generally known.
