SirJohn Bowring, to meet the difficulty, suggested that the lettere, used in Greek MSS. as an abbreviation for T/ieos, might beemployed as an expressive symbol, the inner stroke represent-ing unity and the circle eternity. It would, he said, be in har-mony with the picture-writing of the Chinese, and each partymight pronounce it according to its own shibboleth. But thesuggestion fell to the ground, hke a flower plucked from itsstem, and died without .M-SMUGGLER.
