Treating foot corns, satirical artwork. Titled 'Comfort to the Corns', this artwork shows an elderly woman sitting next to a fire and using a curved knife to reduce her corns. A corn is a callus of dead skin that forms at pressure points on the feet, and can be painful if not treated or removed. This artwork, by the British caricaturist James Gillray (1756-1815), dates from 1800. This copy is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
