Bone drill and grafter. Artwork of a cross-section through a bone drill and grafter that is being used in a hip socket bone grafting operation. Such drilling grafters can also be used to harvest bone chips from healthy bone for use in bone grafting elsewhere in the body. Bone grafting is most successful when carried out using bone from the patient's own body, known as autogenous or autologous bone. Areas of the skeleton that are used to harvest such bone grafts include the chin bone, other part of the mandible, the iliac pelvic crest, the fibula, the ribs, and parts of the skull.
